Enver Mehmeti, Was Sentenced Today To 27 Years Of Imprisonment
Enver Mehmeti, the leader of a violent crew that distributed large amounts of crack and powder cocaine in the New Springville neighborhood of Staten Island and in New Jersey, was sentenced today to 27 years of imprisonment by Senior United States District Judge I. Leo Glasser, at the federal courthouse in Brooklyn. Mehmeti previously pleaded guilty to narcotics trafficking and weapons charges. The sentencing was announced by Loretta E. Lynch, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
As detailed in the superseding indictment and other filings with the court, for most of 2007, the Mehmeti crew operated in New Jersey. Mehmeti shifted the crew’s base of operations to Staten Island in 2008, and continued to distribute significant amounts of crack and powder cocaine to customers on Staten Island until he and other crew members were arrested in 2009. Mehmeti and his crew were involved in at least six shootings that took place in Staten Island during that time. Mehmeti, a career criminal offender who has been previously convicted for weapons and narcotics trafficking and who has admitted to having been involved in at least 20 shootings and 14 robberies, facilitated the acquisition of firearms, including handguns, an SK-47, and a “Tommy Gun,” for all members of the crew. This ongoing federal investigation into narcotics trafficking and gang-related violence in Staten Island has resulted in the arrest of more than one dozen defendants on federal narcotics and weapons charges as well as the seizure of assets, narcotics, and weapons valued at more than $400,000.
“Today’s sentence will prevent a dangerous gang member and drug dealer from causing further destruction in the community,” stated United States Attorney Lynch. “We are committed to keeping our neighborhoods free of drug traffickers and the violence they cause.” Ms. Lynch extended her grateful appreciation to the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office, the Ocean County, New Jersey Prosecutor’s Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration in New York, and the New York City Police Department.
The government’s case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Shreve Ariail and Zainab Ahmad, and Special Assistant United States Attorney Brian Morris.
